The Rise and Fall of Olympique Lyonnais

Business Email: odilanwork@gmail.com

Olympique Lyonnais dominated French football during the 2000s, winning seven successive Ligue 1 titles. They even knocked Manchester City and Juventus out of the UEFA Champions League only three years ago.

Now the club is bottom of the Ligue 1 table though, having finished 7th and 8th in their last two seasons and are without a win from their first five games of the season. With supporters in open revolt and former PSG and France manager Laurent Blanc being sacked only a few weeks ago, I take a look at the historical rise and ultimate fall of one of Frances biggest clubs.

I’ll take you through some of Lyon’s transfer disasters as well the managerial merry go round that’s occurred over recent years.

I’ll also mention Lyon’s recent success with their youth bringing through exciting French talents Maxence Caqueret and Rayan Cherki.

I’ve been a Lyon supporter for 6 years, and I have to say that this current Lyon squad is really struggling right now. They have too many young players with no experience playing at a high level on the pitch. They also have a new owner who is American and knows nothing about football and doesn’t even care about the club’s progress. I missed this club having players like Memphis Depay, Houssem Aouar, Karl Toko Ekambi, Nabil Fekir, and others. This club has officially lost the title of being one of the best clubs in France now. I remember in the 19/20 season when they made it to the Champions League semi finals and I was routing for them to make it to the final and win, but they had lost to Bayern Munich in the semis. This current squad’s performance on the pitch is very poor, just like its financial status. However, Lyon’s women’s team is doing extremely well, but nobody really cares about them. In my opinion, this club is in a huge crisis and needs a reboot.
